Guv's proposed visit to Mau puts district admin in tizzy
Mau/lucknow | October 20, 2005 3:45:18 PM IST

The proposed visit of Governor T V Rajeswar to Mau on Saturday has put the district administration in a tizzy even as relief material was distributed to the residents of the riot ravaged district today.

The situation in Mau, was limping back to normal.

Curfew was not relaxed officially, women and children were allowed to pick up relief supply, incuding milk, ration and medicine from over two dozen points set up by the district administration.

Doctors were seen providing first aid to people in makeshift camps in this district.

The proposed visit by the Governor to the riot scarred Mau had put the district administration in a quantary, which was busy clearing up remnants of the riot that continued for four days beginning October 13.

Raj Bhawan sources in the state capital said while the governor planned to visit Mau on Saturday, the final programme would be made available later on.

Train services -- snapped since October 14 -- resumed last evening.

The proposed visit of a National Commission for Minorities (NCM) team to Mau had been put off on the request of the state government.

The three-member team, led by commission vice-chairman Dr M S Usmani, was to make an on the spot inspection of the situation and organise inter-community meeting to restore peace.

The UP government said 321 arrests had been made so far but the police was yet to arrest independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari and BJP MLC Ramji Singh, against whom FIRs were registered Tuesday.

DIG (range) R P Singh said round-the-clock patrolling was being ensured in the sensitive areas and additional forces deployed to counter any situation.

No incident of violence had been reported in the past two days although an 'uneasy' calm prevailed in Mau, where seven people -- as per official figures -- were killed in the riots leading the authorities to impose an indefinite curfew.
